Every once in a while, I like to return to the Hávamál poem when I am struggling to put a thought into words. While reading through it, I read the stanza, “A foolish man, who among people comes, had best be silent; for no one knows that he knows nothing, unless he talks too much. He who previously knew nothing will still know nothing; talk he ever so much”. Since then, ironically, I have been thinking about words.
Whether writing or speaking, words are important. They are the roots that connect us to the tree of humanity. They are what keeps us bonded or what separates us. Over the years, as I have matured, my opinion on words has changed. I used to think that actions spoke louder than words and there is no doubt that actions are just as important, especially when the words are backed up by the actions. Now, I am realizing the importance of what, how, and when something is said. I have seen time after time that someone fails to realize this meaningful aspect by continuously throwing verbal jabs at someone when there is a group around them. It creates an uncomfortable situation and environment. Personally, it shows how that person sees themselves because a person with a good head on their shoulders would not waste breath to appear more superior. When the person is talking differently when there is the influence of mind-altering substances, which is popular these days, I remind myself that sober thoughts are drunken words and never to take anything too seriously in these cases.
As a human, I often find myself in an inner conflict: should I speak my mind and heart or should I stay silent? I am beginning to realize that it is not black and white, and depending on the case, how much should be said if speaking up is needed? I still do not know the answers to those questions, and perhaps I never will, but it is important to be heard when you feel it is necessary. Let us not forget the power of being silent too at times, however I have learned that to remain silent is to remain stationary, and too much of that is not good.
Writing for this site and the countless times I have kept thoughts in mind has changed my perspective on the meaning of speech. As a result, I have made an oath that when something needs to be said, I will come forth and say it. Whatever it may be, That is a lesson we can all learn from and take into consideration during any stage of life.
Remember to pay attention not only to what is being said but also to the environment in which it was said.
